Choosing a career based on passion is not a bad idea, but understand that passion alone won’t sustain you. The key things to consider when choosing a career are:
- Your basic needs. Can that career provide for your basic needs? I like to categorize these as FCST (Food, Clothes, Shelter, and Transportation) since they are the most important necessities for any individual.
- Demand for the field. Is there high demand for this career? If so, how long is that demand expected to last?
- Entry income. This might not seem like a major factor, but I believe it is important. How much can you earn when starting out?
Call me crazy, but these are just a few key things to consider before choosing a career. The word career itself should tell you something. Let’s put aside the formal definitions and use common sense, okay?
A career is supposed to be your caretaker, so why on earth would you choose an inefficient one? Think about it. Let’s be practical about these things.
